The Civil War Diary of Leander McElhaney
Introduction
This is a transcription of Leander McElhaney's Civil War Diary which was obtained from the family of Bernice Snodrass. Leander was the brother of Jane McElhaney Snodgrass, wife of Mathew Snodgrass and grandmother to Miss Bernice Snodgrass.
The diary is pocket-size, three by six inches. The cover is in bad shape and has actually been hand-sewn together by its owner. Written mostly in pencil, the words have almost faded. Many words are not spelled correctly. A "(?)" has been typed after any illegible words.
In 1862, Leander's military experience consisted of marching toward and waiting for the rebels. Mostly, he documented the weather. About halfway through the year, he became ill and never recovered. From that time, he spent his time in the hospital while his company continued marching and fighting.
Unfortunately Leander became a casualty of the war one month after the diary ends. Due to efforts like his, his country healed and survived.
